Gus-Chrustalny ( Russian Гусь-Хруста́льный ) is a Russian city in the Vladimir Oblast . It is located in the area of Meshchera Lowlands -Niederung, some 200 kilometers east of Moscow and 63 km south of the Oblasthauptstadt Vladimir . The city has 60,784 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). The small river Gus , a left tributary of the Oka, flows through the city .
history
The name of the city - something like "Kristallene (city) on the Gus" - is still associated with the glass trade today; The river name Gus also means goose in Russian , which is also reflected in the city coat of arms, but has no etymological reference to the bird. The first lead crystal factory was founded here in 1756 and a settlement was built at the same time. The products of this factory have become famous nationwide over the centuries. In the 19th century the textile industry developed in the village. The place received city status in 1931.

Attractions
One of the sights of international importance is the magnificent St. George's Cathedral, built between 1892 and 1902, with the monumental painting The Last Judgment by Viktor Wasnezow , today it houses an important lead crystal museum. As one of the oldest cities around Vladimir, Gus-Khrustalny belongs to the Russian Golden Ring .
To the east of the city is Russia's largest civil earth station , operated by the Russian Satellite Communications Company .
