List of cities in Russia |
Jurjew-Polski ( Russian Юрьев-Польский ) is a city in Russia with 19,595 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is located in Vladimir Oblast , some 68 km north-west of the regional capital removed the river Kolokscha , a tributary of the Klyazma . Jurjew-Polski, founded in 1152, is part of the so-called Golden Ring .
history
The city was founded in 1152 by the Suzdal prince Yuri Dolgoruki , who five years earlier also founded Moscow . The name of the city, which was originally Jurjew-Opolski, can be translated as "Juri-Stadt in Opolje". Opolje (also: Salessje) was the name for areas in the north-east of Russia and meant field land. The addition served to distinguish the city from Tartu, which was also called Jurjew at the time, in what is now Estonia . Similar to Moscow, Yuri created a fortress city with Jurjew-Polski, the core of which was a Kremlin , a fortress typical of old Russian cities. The first cathedral was also built here in 1152, the St. George's Cathedral, which was rebuilt from 1230 to 1234 and rebuilt in a different form in 1471 after being destroyed in the first half of the 15th century. To this day, however, its replica from the 15th century is in the Yuryev-Polski Kremlin. In the 13th century the city was devastated by the Tatars , from which it could not recover for centuries and which led to a poor existence. It was not until the beginning of the 16th century that the Archangel Michael Monastery, which had been destroyed by the Tatars, began to grow again. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the monastery received additional church buildings. From the end of the 17th century, Jurjew-Polski acquired a certain importance due to its location on a trade route that connected the Suzdal area with Moscow, but it remained an area characterized by agriculture .
