Hînceşti ( Russian Хынче́шты , Ukrainian Хинчешти - from 1965 to 1990 Kotowsk ) is a city and administrative center of the Hînceşti Rajon in the Republic of Moldova, almost 40 kilometers southwest of the capital Chişinău .

history

The town on the banks of the Kohylnyk River was first mentioned in writing on August 17, 1522 as the Dobreni Inn on the Bessarabian trade route between Europe and Asia.

After the Russo-Turkish War (1806–1812) the property was acquired by the Armenian businessman and diplomat Emanuel Mârzayan (Manuc Bey), who lived in Bucharest .

Under the name Hantscheschti , there was a settlement of German-born residents here in 1940, before the village was named Kotowskoe in 1944 in honor of the Soviet commander-in-chief Grigorij Kotowski , which was changed to Kotowsk in 1965 when the town charter was received.

The current Romanian name Hînceşti has been in use since 1990, shortly before the Republic of Moldova gained independence. Since the establishment of the Rajons of the same name in 2003, the city has been its administrative center.
