The Bergzower Altkanal ( BAK ) is a waterway in Saxony-Anhalt .

description

The old canal is part of the former Ihle Canal, which was built between 1865 and 1872 . This connected the Plauer Canal with the Elbe north of the city of Magdeburg . Three locks , including the Bergzow lock , were built into the new canal . From 1883 to 1891 the Ihle Canal was expanded to a width of 26.00 meters and a depth of 2.00 meters, so that it can be used by ships up to a length of 65.00 meters, a width of 8.00 meters, a draft of 1.60 meters and a load capacity of around 600 tons.

Between 1926 and 1938, the Ihle Canal and the Plauer Canal were expanded to form the Elbe-Havel Canal . The new canal was not dug all the way in the bed of the two pre-existing ones. In several places, a new course was chosen during construction, so that several old sewers were created. The Bergzower Altkanal is the eastern end of the former Ihlekanal. Its confluence with the Elbe-Havel Canal marks the point at which the Ihle Canal also joins the Plauer Canal.

From the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Bergzow lock, the old canal is a federal waterway and a secondary waterway. It branches off north of the village of Bergzow from the Elbe-Havel Canal (EHK km 355.15) or flows into it. The federal waterway Bergzower Altkanal is between the kilometers 28.620 and 30.980 in the area of responsibility of the outskirts Genthin of the Brandenburg Waterways and Shipping Office . The canal is navigable along the federal waterway to the Bergzow lock, in its underwater . Entry into the canal is only permitted for sport and leisure boating. For the commercial shipping channel is blocked. The navigable part of the canal is spanned by a bridge. In the village of Bergzow, at kilometer 29.065, the Bergzower Bridge crosses the district road 1205. In the navigable underwater of the canal the draft is limited to 1.30 meters. Above the Bergzow lock, the canal has partially dried out and is no longer navigable between the Elbe-Havel Canal and the lock. Parts of the former canal bed are still there. However, they only carry water in sections and have been filled in in some places. The canal starts at its western, dry end and ends at the confluence north of Bergzow.
