Kirschatsch ( Russian Киржач ) is a city in the Vladimir Oblast ( Russia ) with 29,965 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 125 km west of the Oblast capital Vladimir am Kirschatsch , a left tributary of the Klyazma in the river system of the Volga .

Kirschatsch is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

history

The place emerged as a craft and trading settlement (Sloboda) around a monastery founded in the 14th century (according to various sources in 1332 on the instructions of Prince Ivan Danilovich of Moscow , or Sergius von Radonezh ). The designation performed according to the same flow, derived from Mordvinian word for the left ( Moksha кяржи / kjarschi; ersjanisch керш / Kersh).

The original monastery was closed in 1764; In 1778 Kirschatsch received town charter.

In the 19th century the city was known for silk weaving and wood carving.

Culture and sights

In the city a number of buildings has been preserved from the 16th to the 17th century, including the ensemble of the Annunciation Monastery ( Благовещенский монастырь / Blagoveshchensky monastyr) with Annunciation Cathedral ( Благовещенский собор / Blagoveshchensky Sobor) and the Church of the Redeemer ( Спасская церковь / Spasskaja zerkow) from 1656.

Kirschatsch owns a history and art museum .

In the village of Novosjolowo , about 20 kilometers from Kirschatsch, an obelisk was erected in 1975 on the spot where the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and his flight trainer Vladimir Seryogin had a fatal accident in 1968 with a MiG-15 .
