Vladimir Sergeyevich Seryogin

Vladimir Sergeyevich Seryogin ( Russian Владимир Сергеевич Серёгин ; * July 7, 1922 , Moscow ; † March 27, 1968 in Novosjolovo , Kirschatsch district , Vladimir Oblast ) was a Soviet test pilot.

Life

Serjogin was born in 1922 in the family of a postal worker. After finishing school, he volunteered for the Red Army in 1940 . He graduated from the Tambov Military Aviation School in 1943 and was then sent to the front .

Serjogin first flew the Il-2 Shturmovik in the 672nd Attack Airship Regiment of the 306th Attack Airplane Division of the 10th Attack Airplane Corps and came up with 140 enemy flights, plus 50 reconnaissance missions. On June 29, 1945, Lieutenant Seryogin was awarded the honorary title Hero of the Soviet Union and the Order of Lenin for "exemplary conduct of combat operations on the front lines" . Also in 1945 he became a member of the WKP (B) .

After the war, Seryogin stayed in the Air Force . He graduated from the Air Force Academy in Zhukovsky and worked as a test pilot from 1953. He was the main test pilot of the MiG-15 and qualified for the MiG-17 . On March 9, 1967, Colonel Seryogin was appointed commander of the cosmonaut training regiment.

He died on March 27, 1968 in a plane crash during a training flight with a MiG-15UTI, together with Yuri Gagarin , where he served as an instructor.

Seryogin and Gagarin's urns were buried in the Kremlin wall on Red Square in Moscow.
