history
The city was founded in 1636 as part of the belt of fortifications, which was supposed to protect Moscow in the south and south-east from attacks by the Tatars . When the Russian Empire expanded south, the fortress lost its importance and Tambov became the commercial and administrative center of an agricultural area. As a result of the administrative reform of 1775, the governorship of Tambov was founded in 1780, which in 1796 became the Tambov governorate .
The industry did not develop on a larger scale until after the October Revolution of 1917. In August 1920 there was a great peasant uprising , the center of which was Tambov. However, he was soon crushed by the Red Army . The most important branches of industry today include the chemical and electrical industries.
During the Second World War , a special prisoner-of-war camp was set up in Tambow for Alsatians, Lorrainers and Luxembourgers, camp No. 788, who - mostly by force, so-called Malgré-nous in France - had served as soldiers in the German Wehrmacht and had been captured. At least a third of the 18,000 or so men were killed. The last prisoners were released in 1955. A delegation from the Alsace region, led by André-Paul Weber , was only able to obtain a list of the names of 1,141 Alsatian victims and to commemorate the dead from the authorities after Mikhail Gorbachev took office .
In addition, there was a prisoner of war camp 188 in the city for German prisoners of war of the Second World War. It was a large transit camp that was closed shortly after the war.
