In the same year, 1875, he entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture as one of the youngest students of all time . Here he studied with Vasily Grigorjewitsch Perow and Illarion Michailowitsch Prjanischnikow, among others . In 1882, after Perov's death, he left school without a degree and went to Saint Petersburg , where he entered the local art academy . Here he studied with Pavel Petrovich Tschistjakow . This course, which disappointed him personally, he finished in 1892. Although he did not receive an award for his thesis, he received a scholarship to be able to continue his education abroad from his own resources. During his studies he also worked as an illustrator for Russian contemporary magazines .

However, he did not go abroad, but traveled to old Russian cities such as Novgorod , Kiev (Ukraine) , Moscow , Uglich and Yaroslavl . Here he got to know architecture , folk crafts , old weapons , fabrics , tapestries , embroidery , etc.

In 1890, 1892 and 1894 he took part in the traveling exhibitions of the Peredwischniki , but later broke with this movement. In the 1890s, when he received very few orders for drawings, watercolors and annual magazine issues , he lived and worked in Lubwino . In 1901 he had a studio built in the nearby village of Didwino . In the 1900s he devoted himself to the Russian rural population of his time, which was also reflected in the works of those years.

In 1903 Ryabushkin was diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis . On the advice of his doctors, he traveled to Switzerland for treatment . The treatment there was unsuccessful, so he returned to Russia. Here he died in Didwino in 1904.

His most famous works are devoted to the life of ordinary Russian people in the 17th century. He also worked on frescoes for the St. Sophia Cathedral in Novgorod and mosaics for the Church of the Resurrection in Saint Petersburg .
