The Moscow Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture ( MUSchWS for short ) ( Russian Московское училище живописи, ваяния и зодчества ) was one of the leading institutions for the training of artists in pre-revolutionary Russia , along with the Petersburg Art Academy .

history

The history of the university goes back to 1832, when JE Makowski , AS Dobrowolski , WS Dobrowolski and AS Jastrebilow started a nature class in Moscow - an artistic group that offered artists the opportunity to perfect themselves in painting and drawing . Soon this circle was called the artist class and in 1843 it was transformed into the Academy of Painting and Sculpture of the Moscow Artists' Society .

In 1865 the institution was housed in the Moscow School of Architecture , after which the designation was chosen as School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.

Graduates of the college had in fact the same status as those of the Petersburg Academy of Art. In 1896 the facility was officially transformed into a university facility with general education and artistic departments. The training lasted 8 years for painters and sculptors and 10 years for architects . Since 1915, the university was in the competence of the Ministry of Trade and Industry .

At the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture studied and / or taught various artists over time, such as: B. Abram Arkhipov , Konstantin Korovin , Sergei Korovin , Isaac Levitan , Konstantin Makovsky , Vladimir Makovsky , Apollon Mokrizki , Vasily Perov , Antoine Pevsner , Thomas Bogdanovich-Dworschetski , Alexander Pomeranzew , Illarion Prjanischnikow , Alexei Savrasov , Vasily Polenov , Mikhail Nesterov , Valentin Serow , Serhij Switoslawskyj , Apollinari Wasnezow , Wassili Tropinin , Leonid Pasternak and Stanisław Żukowski .

Compared to the Petersburg Art Academy, the Moscow Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture was more democratic and played a major role in the development of realistic art in Russia in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century .
