Apollinary Vasnetsov ( Russian Аполлинарий Михайлович Васнецов , scientific. Transliteration Apollinarij Michajlovič Vasnecov ; July 25 * jul. / 6. August  1856 greg. In Rjabowo at Vyatka , † 23 January 1933 in Moscow ) was a Russian painter who before made a name especially in the field of history painting. His older brother was the painter Viktor Michailowitsch Wasnezow .

Life

He grew up in a long-established priestly family. At the age of 13 he became an orphan. Although he possessed exceptional talent, he did not receive any systematic artistic training. In 1872 he finished the priestly school. At the urging of his older brother Viktor Vasnetsov, he went to Saint Petersburg . From 1872 to 1875 he studied painting with his brother, but also with Wassili Dmitrijewitsch Polenow , Ilja Jefimowitsch Repin , Mark Matwejewitsch Antokolski and Wassili Maximowitsch Maximow .

In 1875 he abandoned his plan to enter the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and passed an examination as a primary school teacher, after which he went to Bystriza in the Orlovsky governorate to teach there. Disappointed with this activity, Wasnetsov left Bystriza in 1878 and went to Moscow to see his brother in order to devote himself entirely to art. Here he also met the patron Sawwa Ivanovich Mamontov .

In 1883 Apollinari Wasnezow began to present his works as part of the traveling exhibitions of the Peredwischniki . In the mid-1880s he traveled through the Russian Empire and visited Ukraine and Crimea . In 1898 he toured France , Italy and Germany .

In 1900 Vasnetsov became an academician at the Petersburg Art Academy. In 1903 he became a member of the Association of Russian Artists (Союз русских художников). From 1901 to 1918 Vasnetsov directed the drawing class at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . In the last years of his life he dealt with a. with archaeological research. Apollinari Wasnetsov died in Moscow in 1933.

Afterlife

Much of his work is now in the Tretyakov Gallery and in the Russian Museum .

The asteroid (3586) Vasnetsov was named after him and his brother.
