Serhij Iwanowytsch Switoslawskyj (born September 24th July / October 6th  1857 greg. In Kiev , Kiev Governorate , Russian Empire ; †  September 19, 1931 in Kiev, Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian landscape painter .

Life

Serhij Switoslawskyj studied painting between 1874 and 1882 under Alexei Sawrassow , Vasily Perow and Vasili Polenow at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture . There he created his first independent work, which showed a view from a window of the art college. The picture not only impressed his teachers, but was even bought for his collection by the patron Pawel Michailowitsch Tretyakov . This picture marked the beginning of a cycle of pictures that were created from the perspective of the windows of various Moscow and Kiev buildings.

He was a member of the Peredwischniki , a group of representatives of realism in painting in the Russian Empire. In Kiev he founded an art studio in which, among other things , the painter Sonia Lewitska, who later worked in Paris , was his student. During long trips through the Ukraine and the Caucasus, he created many works that are now considered typical of the Russian Empire at that time. In the 1920s, his eyesight deteriorated, which unfortunately prevented him from painting. He died at the age of 73 in Kiev and was buried there in the Lukjanivska cemetery .
