Sergei Alekseyevich Korovin ( Russian Сергей Алексеевич Коровин ; born November 7 . Jul / 19th August  1858 greg. In Moscow , † October 13 jul. / 26. October  1908 greg. ) Was a Russian painter and illustrator . His brother was the painter Konstantin Korovin .

Career

In the period from 1876 to 1886 he studied at the Moscow Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture , among others with Vasily Perow , Alexei Sawrassow and Illarion Prjanischnikow . From 1888 he was a lecturer at this university himself. He was to carry out this activity until 1907 - with an interruption from 1894 to 1898. During this time he became a member of the Association of Russian Artists .

In his work he followed the tradition and understanding of art of the Peredwischniki . One of his best-known works - the painting On the World has a pictorial composition and is the answer to the event in the peasant milieu after the reforms of 1861. In the second half of the 1890s, his work showed a refinement and turn to poetry , he turned increasingly to landscape painting . If his early works had carefully worked out details, his later works showed the mood and expression in snapshot style.

Sergei Korovin also worked as an illustrator. The drawings for Nikolai Gogol's story The Coat (Шинель), which were made between 1900 and 1908, should be emphasized here. He died in Moscow in 1908.

A large part of his works, which can mainly be assigned to landscape and genre painting , are now in the Moscow Museum of the Revolution , the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum .
