Alexander Nikanorowitsch Pomeranzew ( Russian Алекса́ндр Никано́рович Помера́нцев ; * December 30, 1848 jul. / January 11,  1849 greg. In Moscow ; †  October 27, 1918 in Petrograd ) was a Russian architect and town builder who designed several of his buildings Moscow, Saint Petersburg and other cities became famous.

Pomerantsew studied at the Moscow Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture until 1874, then moved to Saint Petersburg and switched to the Petersburg Art Academy . After graduating in 1878, he worked abroad for nine years, including in Italy , France and Switzerland . On his return he completed his habilitation and in 1892 became a professor of architecture at the Petersburg Academy of Art. From 1899 to 1900 he was also its rector.

Pomeranzev's best-known building is the Moscow Upper Ranks, completed in 1893 (now known as the GUM department store ), which he had designed five years earlier in collaboration with the engineer Vladimir Schuchow . The exterior of this building was mainly based on the old Russian architecture, while modern elements such as the glass roof designed by Schuchow were mainly applied to the interior. A number of Pomeranzew's buildings can be assigned to Art Nouveau , including several station buildings on the Moscow Small Railway Ring . Pomerantsev has also left his mark outside of Russia: the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral he built in the Bulgarian capital Sofia is best known .
