The Siau scops owl ( Otus siaoensis ) is an extremely rare or already extinct species of owl from the genus of the scops . Until 1998 it was considered a subspecies of the Manado scops owl ( Otus manadensis ). It is endemic to the small island of Siau north of Sulawesi .

The Siau Scops Owl looks very similar to the Manado Scops Owl, but is smaller. The length of the only known specimen is 17 centimeters. The wing length is 125 mm, the tail length 55 mm, the barrel length 23 mm and the beak length 19.9 mm. The head and feet are relatively large. The wings and tail are finely banded.

status

The Siau scops owl is only known from the holotype from 1866, which is kept in the Naturalis Museum in Leiden. A search in 1998 to rediscover the species failed, but at the same time revealed that only 50 hectares of forest remained as a suitable habitat. The IUCN has classified the species as "Critically Endangered" based on unconfirmed reports from local residents of Scops Owls on Siau .
