The Manado Zwergohreule ( Otus manadensis ) is an owl from the genus of scops owl . It occurs on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and its neighboring islands.

description

The little owl reaches a length of 19 to 22 centimeters and a weight of 83 to 93 grams. In addition to the yellowish gray there is a very rare red morph . The upper side is spotted with strong dark and sepia brown and provided with lines on the shaft. The wings are broadly banded pale yellow and dark brown. The belly is sparsely dashed and banded on a white background. The eyes are yellow, the beak dirty yellowish horn-colored, the feather ears medium-sized. The leg fletching extends to the base of the yellowish gray toes, which have horn-colored claws.

The allopatrisch occurring Moluccan scops owl is larger and upper tail and shielding clips banded striking.

Way of life

The owl inhabits moist forests and other wooded areas or plantations from the lowlands to an altitude of 2,500 meters. Most likely insects and other arthropods serve as food . The call is a clear, ascending uuiihk sound 0.4 seconds long and repeated every six seconds.

distribution

The nominate form O. m. manadensis lives on Sulawesi. On Peleng there is the much smaller subspecies O. m. mendeni , which is finely speckled at the top and finely scribbled at the bottom and dashed in black and red-brown. O. m. kalidupae on the Tukangbesi Islands , however, is slightly larger. The taxonomy of the Manado scops owl has been little explored. Despite the low level of awareness of the way of life, vocal repertoire and genetic relationships, species rank was suggested for mendeni and kalidupae .
