The Faroese Football Championship in 1988 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was the 46th season overall. It started on May 1, 1988 and ended on September 25, 1988.

The promoted B36 Tórshavn and ÍF Fuglafjørður returned to the top division after one and two years respectively. Champion HB Tórshavn , which could thus win the title for the 13th time. However, defending champion TB Tvøroyri had to relegate for the first time as a founding member of 1. Deild and NSÍ Runavík after five years of first class. Only in 1990 had the champion of the previous year relegated with the B71 Sandur .

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate worsened to 2.78 per game, which was the lowest average since 1985 . The biggest win was achieved by B68 Toftir with a 6-0 in the away game against LÍF Leirvík on matchday 12. The highest-scoring game was played by B36 Tórshavn and GÍ Gøta on matchday six with a 5-3.

mode

By increasing to ten teams in the 1st Deild , each team now played twice against each other on 18 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was the champions of this league, the last two teams were relegated to the 2nd Deild .

Season course

Championship decision

Newcomers B36 Tórshavn remained unbeaten in the first ten games and were at the top of the table from the third matchday on. It was only after a 3-0 away defeat at KÍ Klaksvík that the place had to be swapped with HB Tórshavn , who in turn overtook GÍ Gøta 5-1 after two defeats in the first three games and did not lose from the third to the 13th match day . On matchday 14, HB lost 1-0 away to B68 Toftir , who climbed to third place. HB's lead on B36 remained at three points, however, as B36 lost 1-0 at home to NSÍ Runavík . On matchday 16, HB lost again away with 1: 3 against KÍ Klaksvík and the next matchday did not get beyond a 1: 1 in the away game against ÍF Fuglafjørður , whereby now B68 Toftir moved up to one point. The decision for the championship was therefore only made on the last day of the match, when HB won its home game 4-1 against TB Tvøroyri , with TB equalizing 1: 1 in the 23rd minute. So B68 Toftir's 4-0 home win against B36 Tórshavn didn't help.

Relegation battle

First bottom of the table were NSÍ Runavík and KI Klaksvik, who lost their games 1: 4 against HB Tórshavn and GÍ Gøta on matchday one. While NSI was able to gain ground with two wins against TB Tvøroyri and ÍF Fuglafjørður and climbed to fourth place, KI remained on the relegation ranks despite a 3-2 win against VB Vágur and occupied them up to and including the 15th match day. The reigning champions TB Tvøroyri also started the season badly and only won 1-0 against GÍ Gøta on matchday three for the first time of the season. However, nine games in a row followed without another win, which led to the crash to last place. NSÍ also failed to win any further between the fourth and twelfth matchdays. The fight for relegation remained exciting until the end, on the last day of the game the decision was to be made between five teams, four of which were tied. The worst starting position was KÍ Klaksvík, one point behind. However, they won the direct duel against the penultimate NSÍ Runavík 2-1. Absalon Østerø scored the winning goal in the 50th minute. LÍF Leirvík also secured relegation by beating GÍ Gøta 3-1, with the goals for 2-1 and 3-1 not falling until the 80th and 90th minute. VB Vágur also saved themselves with a 2-1 home win over ÍF Fuglafjørður. TB Tvøroyri, who lost 4-1 to the new champions HB Tórshavn, fell from seventh to ninth place, which resulted in direct relegation.
