On September 24, 2008 , Johannesen became the new Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands after the resignation of Jóannes Eidesgaard .

Resignation from office (2015)

After the ruling coalition suffered heavy losses in the parliamentary elections ( Løgtingsval ) on September 1, 2015, Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen announced his resignation as Prime Minister the following day. On September 3, 2015, he was formally dismissed from his office by Parliament President Jógvan á Lakjuni and at the same time asked to continue the office of Prime Minister until a new coalition was formed.

In the course of the same day he also resigned the presidency of the unionist party Sambandsflokkurin in order to clear the way for a fresh start. However, as a simple MP from his party, he will belong to the next Løgting.

Soccer

society

Johannesen did not start playing football until 1984 and was the goalkeeper of HB Tórshavn until 2007 , but was only rarely used in the end and mainly for the second team. He played 299 competitive games for his club, placing him in second place among the record players after Rúni Nolsøe . He made his debut in 1984 on the twelfth match day of the first division in the 1: 4 home defeat against LÍF Leirvík , when he replaced the previous goalkeeper Mikkjal Mikkelsen for the last three games. In the Cup he scored his only competitive goal in the 1995 group stage in a 22-0 record win against Skansin Tórshavn . In his career he won four championship titles and seven cup wins with HB. For the first two championship titles he played with Uni Arge , Jan Dam and Jóannes Jakobsen , among others , in 1998 Jan Dam, Andrew av Fløtum , Hans Fróði Hansen , Jóhannis Joensen , Allan Mørkøre and Jens Erik Rasmussen were in the team. In the 2004 championship, he only played the last league game when the title was already certain. At that time Jákup á Borg , Jan Dam, Rógvi Jacobsen and Heðin á Lakjuni were his teammates. He then played five more times for the second team, most recently in 2016.

European Cup

Johannesen has 15 games in the European Cup. He made his debut in 1993 for HB Tórshavn in the preliminary round of the European Cup Winners' Cup in the away game against RAF Jelgava , which was lost 1-0. However, since the opponent did not play for the second leg, HB was in the main round and met FC Universitatea Craiova , against which HB lost 4-0 and 3-0. His last two games played Johannesen in 1998/99 in the preliminary round of the UEFA Cup against Vaasan PS . After the home game was won 2-0, HB lost 4-0 away and was eliminated from the competition.

National team

In the Faroese national football team he was a substitute for Jens Martin Knudsen . At the beginning of the 1990s he was traded as a possible successor for Knudsen, but that never happened. Nevertheless, he completed four international matches between 1991 and 1992. Johannesen played his first game on September 25, 1991 in the European Championship qualifier against Denmark , when he came on in the 56th minute for Jens Martin Knudsen when the score was 2-0. The game in Landskrona was ultimately lost 4-0. On June 16, 1992 Johannesen came in the World Cup qualifier against Cyprus , which was lost 2-0 in Toftir , for his last national team appearance.

Johannesen also played for the Faroese handball club Kyndil Tórshavn and scored a total of 625 goals in 163 games in the first division until 2005.

Culture

At the beginning of the 1990s, the Faroese public was able to get an idea of Kaj Leo Johannesen's singing skills when he sang the song Vit syngja on the album Vit herja á of the Faroese national football team .

The Faroese punk band 200 dedicated a mocking song to him in 2005 with the title "Sig ikki nei Kaj" (Don't say no, Kaj). At least in one point he and the politically committed punk rockers have the same stance: They fought for the anti-discrimination law adopted in 2006 to protect homosexuality in the Faroe Islands .
