Kristian Djurhuus (born February 12, 1895 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands , † November 20, 1984 in Tvøroyri ) was a Faroese politician and statesman of the Union Party ( Sambandsflokkurin ).

Life

family

Kristian Djurhuus was the son of Elin, née Larsen from Porkeri , and Hans Andreas Djurhuus (1869–1949), a master carpenter from Tórshavn. One of his ancestors was the poet Jens Christian Djurhuus (1773-1853) and the two poet brothers Janus and Hans Andrias Djurhuus belonged to his relatives.

Kristian Djurhuus married Anna Margretha Nielsen in 1917. The marriage resulted in four sons and the family lived in Trongisvágur .

career

In 1920 Kristian Djurhuus was appointed Sysselmann ( Sýslumaður ) of Suðuroy , based in Trongisvágur. He held this office for 45 years until he left in 1965. From 1926 to 1934 Djurhuus was a member of the Froðba parish council , which he also chaired until 1930. From 1932 to 1962 and 1966 to 1970 he was a member of the Løgting , whose president he was during the turbulent years of the Faroe Islands during World War II .
