The state government of the Faroe Islands ( Faroese: Føroya Landsstýrið ) is the autonomous government of the Faroe Islands as part of the Imperial Community (Faroese: Ríkisfelagsskapur ) of the Kingdom of Denmark .

The currently incumbent Faroese state government was formed on September 15, 2015 and is a left-liberal coalition of Javnaðarflokkurin , Tjóðveldi and Framsókn headed by the Social Democratic Prime Minister ( Løgmaður ) Aksel V. Johannesen .

composition

The Faroese State Government is composed of:

  • the Prime Minister (Faroese Løgmaður , Danish Lagmand , an office that had already existed from 1274 to 1816)
  • and the ministers (Faroese Landsstýrismenn ).

The Løgmaður is usually elected by the Løgting every four years . He then appoints the ministers, the number of whom the constitution stipulates at least two. Løgmaður and the ministers have an ex officio seat in Løgting without voting rights . Regular parliamentary mandates are suspended; they will be filled by a voter from the party list. If a minister resigns, he can resume his voting seat in parliament.

The first woman in a ministerial office was Jóngerð Jensina Purkhús , who in 1985 became Minister of Finance, Economy and Environment in the Atli Dam IV state government . Since September 15, 2015, the state government has had four female and four male ministers for the first time in history.

February 4, 2008 to September 26, 2008 .

Coalition of Javnaðarflokkurin (J), Tjóðveldi (TJ) and Miðflokkurin (MF).

After the Løgting election on January 19, 2008, for the first time in the history of the Faroe Islands there was a red-red government made up of Social Democrats (J) and Left Republicans (TJ). It was Kyndilsmessulandsstýrið ( Candlemas called -Regierung) because they came on 2 February. The Christian Democrats (MF) provided another minister as a junior partner. Another novelty was the post of foreign minister , which the Republican chief Høgni Hoydal took over.

Until 2008 the Løgmaður had taken over the foreign affairs. After apparently a personal falling out between Eidesgaard and Hoydal, the four ministers of the Tjóðveldi were dismissed on September 15, 2008. Eidesgaard ran her business until the successor government took office.

Ministries and authorities

On March 3, 2004, the Ministry of Oil was dissolved and incorporated as an authority into the Ministry of Trade and Industry and partially into the newly created Ministry of the Interior. From 2004 to 2008 the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health formed a joint ministry.

In addition, the autonomous government operates a number of authorities. Well known among stamp collectors is the Faroe Islands postal authority, Postverk Føroya .
