Poul Johan Sundberg Michelsen (born July 22, 1944 ) is a Faroese businessman and politician. He was mayor of Tórshavn from 1981 to 1992 . Poul Michelsen is chairman of the Framsókn Progressive Party and was its MP in Løgting until mid-September 2015 . Since then he has been Minister for Trade and Industry and Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Faroese state government .

Businessman

After training in the retail and food sector, Poul Michelsen founded a company for chilled and frozen products in his basement in 1974 . The business developed so well in the years that followed that in 1977 the joint stock company P / F Poul Michelsen was founded. Today's wholesaling building , covering around 5,200 m², was put into operation in 1979. P / F Poul Michelsen (also called PM Heilsøla / Wholesale or PM for short ) today has around 35-40 employees in the core business and, in addition to refrigerated and frozen products, offers fruit, vegetables and baked goods as well as the delivery of food and beverages and other services.

Poul Michelsen left the management of his company after taking over the ministerial office in September 2015.

Politician

From 1981 to 1992 he was mayor of the Faroese capital Tórshavn. He was a member of Fólkaflokkurin in Løgting from 1984 to 1990 and from 2002 to 2010 and has been a member of numerous parliamentary committees (culture, finance, justice, trade, environment) over the course of his long political career . From 1989 to 1990 he was also Deputy Løgtings President .

After Michelsen had been a member of the Fólkaflokkurin for over 40 years , he ended his membership in October 2010. He had come to believe that the party had betrayed its values and ideals. Michelsen missed a really liberal attitude in the social and economic field. The direction of the party with regard to self-determination and independence of the Faroe Islands from Denmark did not go far enough for him. At that time, he viewed Anfinn Kallsberg in particular as an obstacle to overdue reforms.

In April 2011, he and other dissatisfied people founded a new liberal party called Framsókn (progress), and was elected first chairman at the founding assembly. The Progress Party entered parliament in 2011 and Poul Michelsen has been a member of Framsókn in Løgting ever since.

On September 15, 2015, he became Minister for Trade and Industry and Minister for Foreign Affairs in the newly formed Faroese state government under Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen .
