In September 2015 she left the Fólkaflokkurin, shortly afterwards became a member of the Framsókn progressive party for a few days and then sat as an independent member of parliament until the beginning of February 2016. politics

From 2004 to 2008 Annika Olsen was a member of the Tórshavn city council.

In the Faroese parliamentary election on January 19, 2008, she was elected to the Løgting for the first time with 520 personal votes as a member of the Fólkaflokkurin . Annika Olsen was Minister of the Interior from September 2008 to April 2011. From April to October 2011 she was a member of parliament and the culture committee.

In the Løgtings election in autumn 2011, she was re-elected to parliament with 1,344 votes. This was the best result within their party and the second best result for all parties. Only Kaj Leo Johannesen received more votes. She was then Minister of Social Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of her country from November 2011 to September 2015.

In the Løgtings election on September 1, 2015, she was re-elected with 961 personal votes. This was the second best result within their party, just behind Jacob Vestergaard . A good week after the election to Løgting, she surprisingly left the Fólkaflokkurin on September 9, 2015. After a week as an independent MP, Annika Olsen joined the Framsókn progressive party on September 17th. In the subsequent distribution of the seats in the parliamentary committees, she was given the most important post as chairman of the finance committee.

Since Poul Michelsen , the chairman of Framsókn, has no right to vote in parliament as a minister, Annika Olsen belonged to Ruth Vang and Hanna Jensen in a three-member parliamentary group in Løgting, which was made up exclusively of women.

Just three days after joining, she announced on September 20, 2015 that she had resigned from the Progress Party with immediate effect and had also resigned from chairing the Finance Committee. As a reason for her move, she stated that she had been under heavy pressure in the past few days and that the time to think about the change of party was too short. You can no longer justify this to your voters. She also announced that she had submitted a request to Parliament for a temporary leave of absence.

On February 4, 2016, the Fólkaflokkurin announced at a press conference that Annika Olsen was a member of the party again. A majority within the Fólkaflokkurin had previously approved the re-entry of the MPs, who have been independent since September 2015.

In the local elections on November 8, 2016, she was elected to the city council of Tórshavn and won the election for mayor with seven votes against the long-time incumbent Heðin Mortensen , who received only six votes. She has held the office of mayor since January 1, 2017.
