Edmund Joensen

Edmund Esbern Johannes Joensen (born September 19, 1944 in Oyri ) is a Faroese Unionist politician ( Sambandsflokkurin ) and was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands from 1994-1998 (Løgmaður).

Edmund is the son of Hansina, née Samuelsen from Haldórsvík and Poul Joensen from Oyri. He is married to Edfríð, geb. Johannesen from Norðskáli .

He has been a member of the Løgting since 1988 (with the exception of his time as head of government). 1990–2001 he was chairman of the Unionists who advocate close ties between the Faroe Islands and Denmark. 1994–98 he was a member of the Danish Folketing (during his time as head of government he was represented).

Edmund Joensen has been chairman of the Løgting since 2002. In the 2007 Folketing elections , he was elected as one of the two Faroese MEPs in the Danish Parliament.

There he is chairman of the Faroe Islands Committee. He is the first Faroese in history to chair a Folketing Committee.
