Hákun Djurhuus

Hákun Djurhuus (born December 11, 1908 in Tórshavn , † September 22, 1987 ) was a Faroese politician of the People's Party ( Fólkaflokkurin ).

Hákun Djurhuus was 1946–1980 member of the Løgting , 1950–1951 its chairman, 1951–1956 Minister in the state government of the Faroe Islands , 1957–1960 and 1968–1973 member of the Danish Folketing and 1963–1967 Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands . At the same time he was party chairman.

Hákun was the son of Armingard or Armgarð Maria, nee Djurhuus from Tórshavn and Joen Hendrik D. Poulsen from Skúvoy . The brothers Janus Djurhuus and Hans Andrias Djurhuus were his uncles. He was married to Hjørdis, nee Kamban. It is noteworthy that Hákun was baptized with his mother's maiden name, which was very unusual at the time.

After completing his training in 1932 Djurhuus was a teacher in Skálabotnur and Innan Glyvur and 1934-1976 teacher in Klaksvík . However, due to his political activities, he was released most of the time, as Finnbogi Ísakson remembered, who was a student in Klaksvík from 1950–1960:

“I think I remember that nine years from now, HD was on my schedule. That meant Hákun Djurhuus, but unfortunately he was hardly my teacher: two of the first Danish lessons in second grade and one lesson in secondary school. Perhaps Hákun Djurhuus had a special position because he was minister from 1951 to 1957 ... "

He was editor-in-chief of the Norðlýsið newspaper and made sure that his famous uncle Janus wrote articles for the newspaper on a regular basis.
