Jóannes Eidesgaard

Jóannes Dan Eidesgaard (born April 19, 1951 in Tvøroyri , Faroe Islands ) is a Faroese politician . He was Chairman of the Faroese Social Democrats 1996–2011 and Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands 2004–2008.

Eidesgaard initially worked as an elementary and high school teacher on his native island Suðuroy .

Since 1990 he has been a member of the Løgting . From 1991 to 1996 he was a minister in various coalitions, and from 1994 to 1996 also Deputy Prime Minister.

From 1998 to 2001 he was one of the two Faroese MEPs in the Danish Parliament, the Folketing .

Since February 4, 2004, Jóannes Eidesgaard was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands. The governing coalition consisted of Social Democrats, Conservatives and Unionists . After the parliamentary elections in 2008, a left alliance of Social Democrats, Republicans and the Center Party was formed under his leadership . When the coalition broke up in the same year and he had given up his trust in the Republican leader Høgni Hoydal , he resigned on September 24, 2008. He was succeeded by Kaj Leo Johannesen , the chairman of the co-ruling Unionists. Eidesgaard entered the new cabinet as finance minister. On February 20, 2011, he gave up his office.

Honors

  • September 16, 2007 - Grand Knight's Cross with Star of the Republic of Iceland for his services to the Iceland-Faroe Islands Economic Union.
