Miðflokkurin (MF) is a Christian Democratic - conservative party in the Faroe Islands . Miðflokkurin means center party or center party . It bears the list designation H. on the ballot papers.

history

MF was founded on May 30, 1992 . Kristiligi Fólkaflokkurin - Føroya Framburðs- og Fiskivinnuflokkur (Christian People's Party), which ran for elections from 1958 to 1998, can be regarded as the predecessor .

The MF was involved in the Eidesgaard II government in 2008 and has been the Minister of Health in the Johannesen II cabinet since November 14, 2011 .

program

The concerns and goals of the MF are summarized in a 16-point program :

  1. The Christian outlook on life should shape society
  2. Protection of human life from conception to natural death
  3. Protection of marriage and family
  4. Enabling the sick, the elderly and the disabled to lead a safe and good life
  5. Restricting alcohol and drug abuse
  6. Diverse work and training opportunities for the young generation
  7. Citizen-friendly politics
  8. Sensible use of tax dollars
  9. Work for everyone
  10. Work has to be worthwhile
  11. Use of the god-given fish wealth of the Faroe Islands as public property of all Faroe Islands
  12. Better working conditions for all working people
  13. Strengthening agriculture
  14. Establishment of independent schools
  15. Effective environmental protection and greater emphasis on preventive measures
  16. Rejection of membership in the EU , intensified cooperation with non-EU members ( Norway , Iceland , Greenland )

The actual party program continues with international cooperation (selection):

  • Cooperation with the EU should be based on specific trade and fisheries agreements.
  • Trade agreements are also to be concluded with other states.
  • Cooperation in the north-west of Europe must be expanded, as must cooperation in the Nordic Council .
  • Promotion of the international exchange of "know-how"
  • Expansion of development cooperation as a requirement of Christian charity
  • Supporting Israel in the struggle for security and peace

From 2005, the legal equality of homosexuals in the Faroe Islands polarized society. The MF opposed the inclusion of gays and lesbians in the Faroese anti-discrimination law, which was passed by a narrow majority in parliament in 2006 after heated debates. When the MF took part in a (short-lived) government with Social Democrats and Republicans in 2008, it ultimately demanded that the coalition partners renounce registered partnerships and adoption rights for same-sex couples . There was an uproar in 2010 that received international attention. Several politicians stayed away from an official lunch with Icelandic Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir because she was accompanied by her wife. MF chairman Jenis av Rana said that "such forms of homosexual activity" are against the Bible and are not acceptable.
