The Nunatta Qitornai ( Greenlandic for "The Children of Our Country") is a political party in Greenland .
history
The Nunatta Qitornai was founded by Vittus Qujaukitsoq in early February 2018 . He was previously a member of the Siumut and had lost the election as party leader in June 2017 to Kim Kielsen . He then resigned from the party in September to protest that it did not strive enough for independence. He named the party after Augo Lynges youth movement, which caused outrage in Augo's grandson Per Kunuk Lynge, who saw no substantive agreement between Augo Lynges and Vittus Qujaukitsoq's goals.
The party received prominent support from former Prime Minister Aleqa Hammond . She was also previously a member of the Siumut and was also elected as a Folketing Member for the Siumut in 2015. This enabled the Nunatta Qitornai to occupy one of the two seats in the Folketing from 2018. The party ran in the 2018 parliamentary election and received the fewest votes of all seven running parties, but still got a seat in parliament. Then she went into a four-party coalition with the Siumut, the Partii Naleraq and the Atassut. After a few months, the Partii Naleraq and then the Atassut left the government, so that since spring 2019 only a minority government consisting of Siumut and Nunatta Qitornai has remained. In the 2019 Folketing election, Aleqa Hammond was able to record a respectable success and at least let the party get the fourth most votes, but this meant that her Folketing seat fell back to the Siumut.
Political orientation
The political goal of the Nunatta Qitornai is first and foremost to achieve independence from Denmark as quickly as possible. In addition, the party criticized the municipal reform of 2009 and would like to return to 17 municipalities. She also advocates measures to reduce the cost of living.
