Folkebevægelsen mod EU ( People's Movement Against the EU ) is a political organization in Denmark that only competes in the European elections to the European Parliament . The party letter N was assigned to her on Danish ballot papers . Until 1994 it was called Folkebevægelsen mod EF ( popular movement against the EC ).

organization

The popular movement consists of individual members as well as collective members (organizations). The individual members belong to about 60 local associations (lokalkomitéer) . The following are affiliated as collective members: The liberal party Retsforbundet , The Greens , the environmental party Danmarks Miljøparti , the left-wing Enhedslisten party represented in parliament , the four communist parties Kommunistisk Parti , Kommunistisk Parti i Danmark , Danmarks Kommunistiske Parti and Arbejderpartiet Kommunisterne , der democratic-Scandinavian association Frit Norden and the EU radio and TV audience association Kig & Lyt .

Individual nationwide unions as well as several local and industry associations are collective members, including the seamen in 3F and the 3F local chapters in Copenhagen, Ålborg and Esbjerg, Landsforbundet for socialpædagoger within FOA and the Copenhagen local chapters of 3F construction workers, metal workers, electricians, plumbers, street cleaners and Bricklayer.

Although non-partisan, the main focus of membership is on the left political spectrum, but every time the movement takes part in elections, a number of non-partisans, candidates from the political center or members of bourgeois parties have run for election. The best known was Ib Christensen , former chairman and Folketing member of the Retsforbundet party , who represented the popular movement in the European Parliament from 1984-1994. The internationally best known member of the People's Movement was Jens-Peter Bonde , who represented the People's Movement from 1979–1992 and the June Movement from 1993–2008 ; In 2005 he was a co-founder of the EU Democrats .

At the European level, the popular movement works with other organizations and parties critical of the EU. In the European Parliament, the movement was a member of the Technical Group (1979–1984), Rainbow Group ( 1984–1994), Europe of Nations (1994–1999), Europe of Democracies and Differences (1999–2002), European United Left / Nordic Greens Left (GUE / NGL) (2002-2019).

history

Folkebevægelsen mod EU was founded in 1972 in advance of the referendum on Denmark's accession to the EC. Folkebevægelsen gathered the opponents of Danish membership at that time. In Denmark, six referendums have been held since 1972 on the extension of the EC / EU treaties, mostly due to the rule on sovereignty surrender of the Basic Law . At every vote, Folkebevægelsen recommended voting no. Your request in 2008 to examine the Lisbon Treaty in a referendum could not be enforced.

Since 1979 the party has participated in the European Parliament elections, in which it was represented in every legislative period. While Folkebevægelsen initially had four MEPs in the European Parliament , it was only represented by one until 2019.

In the 2019 election, Enhedslisten stood for the first time , who had previously waived the candidacy in favor of Folkebevægelsen. Enhedslisten is also a collective member of Folkebevægelsen. The two parties entered into a list alliance. When the popular movement fell from 8.1% to 3.7%, it lost its mandate.

The popular movement sees itself as a non-partisan ( tværpolitisk ) and EU opponent. An EU-critical competitor was Junibevægelsen ( The June Movement ), which was founded after Denmark joined the Maastricht Treaty in 1993 . Danish voters refused to join in 1992, but after negotiations and the Edinburgh Accord , four reservations arose, after which a new referendum in 1993 approved accession. At the turn of the year 1993/94, Folkebevægelsen lost three of their then four MEPs to the June Movement. Junibevægelsen disbanded after the unsuccessful European elections in 2009.

A study from 2019, which looked at the voting behavior of parties on climate policy issues in the EU Parliament, rated the popular movement as a “defender” of climate-friendly politics.
