Interior panorama

The Gustav-Adolf-Verein organized the construction of a church for the Protestant population of the former Kurmainzischen kitchen villages Melchendorf and Dittelstedt , which grew strongly in the 19th century . On June 23, 1900, the foundation stone for the neo-Romanesque building was laid between the two villages in the open corridor on the Großer Herrenberg . After Hochheim (1883) and Witterda (1891), the Gustav-Adolf-Kirche zu Melchendorf-Dittelstedt was the third Protestant church built for the residents of the Mainz kitchen villages with the help of the Gustav-Adolf-Verein.

On August 25, 1901, two bells from the Karl Friedrich Ulrich bell foundry (owner Franz Schilling, Apolda) were consecrated and on October 31, 1901 the church, which was named after the donor, was consecrated. It is 24 m long, eleven meters wide, the tower is 36 m high, the height to the gutter is 7.5 m and to the ridge 14 m. The chancel was originally decorated with four stained-glass windows from the "Frank'sche Kunstanstalt" in Naumburg. The church stalls consist of 24 benches with 200 seats; there are also around 70 seats in the organ gallery and the side galleries.

In the world wars , all organ metals and the big bell were confiscated for war purposes. The church suffered great damage from vandalism in July 1945. From 1948 the church was repaired and could be consecrated again on October 31, 1951.

The Böhm organ

In 1955 Rudolf Böhm installed a new organ with two manuals and 14 voices.

In 1981 the construction of the residential area "Großer Herrenberg" began. Now the church stood in the middle of the residential area, was restored from May 1985 and the organ was renewed with donations from the partner community of Wehrheim im Taunus. The re-inauguration took place on September 22, 1985. From autumn 1986 to October 1990 the community center was built next to the church. In 2010 the organ was restored by Bernhard Kutter. In addition, the intonation has been revised and the action converted to electric .
