Stram Kurs (in German "Strammer Kurs" or "Harter Kurs") is a Danish party with a strong right-wing extremist and Islamophobic orientation. The founder and chairman is the lawyer Rasmus Paludan, who has been convicted, among other things, of racist statements . Central demands of the party are a ban on Islam in Denmark and the deportation of all residents of Denmark who are not ethnic Danes. The party and its founder have gained public attention by repeatedly holding anti-Islamic demonstrations, during which Korans are burned and counter-demonstrators are insulted.

history

The party founder Rasmus Paludan was previously active in several Danish parties - first in the social-liberal radical Venstre , then in the EU-critical voter association JuniBevægelsen , the conservative-liberal Venstre and finally in the right-wing populist and economically liberal party Nye Borgerlige, which was founded in 2015 . After a speech in which he called for gun violence against immigrants, he was expelled from that party in February 2017.

After being excluded from the party, on March 16, 2017, he registered the “Danmarks Uafhængigheds Parti” as a “voluntary association”, which was renamed “Stram Kurs” on June 19, 2017. At a demonstration by the organization “Stop Islamiseringen i Danmark” (Stop Islamization in Denmark) on July 15, 2017 in Roskilde , he presented his party to the public for the first time. The party's YouTube channel was created two days later .

The party appeared provocative for the first time in November 2017 when a poster was presented on which twenty politically active Danes named by name with a non-Western migration background were asked to leave the country - if necessary with a parachute ("Stram course 'Top 20") . Among them was the Lebanese-born poet and musician Mazen Ismail, who reacted humorously by shooting a parachute jump over Haslev with the Danish Parachute Union and uploading it to Facebook.

On April 28, 2019, the party submitted 21,612 of 20,109 necessary voter declarations to the Ministry of Economics and the Interior in order to be able to participate in the upcoming Folketing elections. When collecting voter declarations, the party took advantage of a loophole in the law that will not be closed until 2020 in order to get the necessary votes. The responsible institution declared on May 6, 2019 that Stram Kurs will be allowed to run in the upcoming elections; all voter declarations were recognized. According to an election poll conducted between April 29 and May 5, 2019, the party would achieve 2.7% of the vote in the upcoming parliamentary election, 0.7 percentage points above the 2% threshold. In the elections for the Folketing on June 5, 2019, the party finally received only 1.79% of the votes cast, which means that it failed to make it into parliament.

Conflicts

Fake voter declarations

The election committee reprimanded the party in December 2019 for possible fraud with voter declarations. As a result, it is temporarily not possible for the party to collect new voter declarations for the upcoming European elections in 2024. The complaint relates to two facts: on the one hand, the party took e-mail addresses from the voter declarations for the 2019 parliamentary election and put them on the list of voter declarations for the 2024 European elections without the consent of the citizens concerned. Second, of the 55,000 email addresses, only 40,000 were unique.

Scandals in Jutland

Three members of Stram Kurs exposed the machinations in their party. According to her, a key figure has used and distributed drugs such as amphetamines and hashish. According to investigative research by the news magazine Redox, the accused is Dion Øland Hansen. He is a district leader in Stram Kurs and has a criminal record for shooting three people in a car with a hunting rifle.

John Salvesen accuses his partner of infidelity. Like him, his partner is in a key position in the party. He is of the opinion that the partner should no longer be able to perform a core function in the party. In doing so, he includes his private life in the machinations of the party. John Salvesen is known for burning the Koran, after which he was charged with the blasphemy paragraph in 2017; the paragraph was abolished because of its case. He disseminated images of guns in public media.

In Hadersleben, the Juhler couple withdrew from the party. This happened three weeks after Christmas Eve , when Rasmus Paludan celebrated Christmas with the couple. In a leaked email between the couple and Rasmus Paludan, “If you continue to make false claims about the party, we would normally take an injunction against you, but since you have no money, hair or teeth, then of course there is none Reason for an indictment, even if it cannot be ruled out. ”The couple accuse the party of being governed from above and that the members are badly treated.

Misappropriated donations against cancer

Alexander Jensen von Stram Kurs Ungdom (youth organization of the party) has collected a total of 370 crowns. These donations never reached Knæk Cancer.

YouTube lock

Because of the widespread agitation against u. a. The party's YouTube channel was blocked for migrants and Muslims.

Political positions

The Stram Kurs party program consists almost exclusively of the topics of migration and Islamic politics. The demands made contradict the Basic Law of Denmark and international conventions. Despite this, the party asserts that it will adhere to the Basic Law, but demands that the constitution be drafted in such a way that practicing Islam should be made as difficult as possible or even forbidden. Parts of the European Convention on Human Rights , in particular Article 8, are no longer to be applied by Denmark, which, according to the party, does not lead to any loss of international reputation. Reference is made to Finland , which has allegedly violated the Convention several times without this having had any consequences.

According to its own description, the party's ideology is based on two pillars: one identitary and one libertarian . The philosophical basis of both pillars is an "ethno-nationalist utilitarianism ", which describes a policy through which "the greatest possible happiness for as many ethnic Danes as possible" is to be achieved. Individual rights of freedom should only be made possible for people of exclusively Danish origin. They are defined by the party as “a person with exclusively Danish citizenship from birth with Danish as their mother tongue”. In addition to ethnic Danes, the party program also explicitly counts Danish Jews and people who were adopted as babies or toddlers as Danes.

According to the party program, tourists and highly qualified workers should only be allowed to stay in Denmark for a short time, as they are seen as an economic factor for the country. In the event that, according to the party program, an ethnic Dane wants to marry a foreign person, this person may only live in Denmark if they come from a Western European country. In any case, she should pay for the Danish health care services herself. Spouses from non-western countries should be prohibited from staying in Denmark, in which case the couple must move abroad.

Denmark should withdraw from all international refugee conventions and no longer process any asylum applications. All persons with a non-Western migration background should be expelled from Denmark, even if they already have Danish citizenship or were born as descendants in the country. Returns to Bosnia and Kosovo are explicitly mentioned in the program (civil war countries in the 1990s, from which numerous asylum seekers also came to Denmark at that time). If possible, applicants for a permanent residence permit should be returned to their home countries, otherwise they should be imprisoned.

The Danish police force is to be increased to 30,000 men and expanded to include an “Aliens Police ” to remove Muslims and illegal immigrants from the country. What is called for is tougher action against criminal foreigners who are referred to as "the foreign enemies" (De Fremmede Fjender), as well as Danes who stand by them as alleged helpers and who are called "the fifth column" (Den Femte Column) by the party become. Ethnic Danes should, as far as they are reliable, be allowed to carry sharp weapons. It is explicitly pointed out that Danes and non-Danes should not have the same rights in Denmark.

A part of the party program is also dedicated to the welfare state, whereby it is made clear right at the beginning that state benefits such as unemployment benefits , health insurance and pensions can only be claimed by ethnic Danes.

public perception

Demonstrations

Koran during a demonstration in Nørrebro

The main part of the public relations work of Stram Kurs is the holding of anti-Islamic demonstrations under high police protection. These usually take place in central squares in city districts with a high proportion of Islamic immigrants and attract very few participants, but all the more counter-demonstrators and onlookers. Almost all the demonstrations are uploaded to the YouTube video portal. The course of a "Demonstration for Denmark og mod kriminelle samfundstabere" ("Demonstration for Denmark and against criminal failure of society") basically follows a repetitive sequence: Rasmus Paludan presents himself with some self-designations such as "Soldier of freedom, protector of the weak, guardian of society , Light of the Danes ”(“ Frihedens Soldat, De Svages Beskytter, Samfundets Vogter, Danernes Lys ”) and provoked the Muslims present with statements about homosexual acts. Counter-demonstrators are also frequently insulted. Most of the time, a Qur'an is desecrated, for example by burning or trampling on it.

After a demonstration in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen in April 2019 led to violent riots in which cars were set on fire, the police temporarily banned the demonstration for security reasons.

In 2018, the party held a total of 53 demonstrations. In 2018 and early 2019, covering the "Stram Kurs" demonstrations cost Danish taxpayers DKK 24 million.

Statements by the party leader

Several statements by the party leader Rasmus Paludan caused a stir:

In a video message published on YouTube, Paludan insulted Bwalya Sørensen, spokeswoman for the Danish section of the organization Black Lives Matter , as being less intelligent and attributed this to her ethnic origin. “(Yes, if like Bwalya Sørensen and most of the negroes in South Africa you are not gifted enough to see how things actually are, then it is much easier to see everything in black and white and, as I said, blame the whites In April 2019 he was sentenced to 14 days in prison on probation in accordance with Section 266 b of the Danish Criminal Code. The court saw aggravated circumstances in the case as they classified the video released on April 2, 2018 as propaganda. Paludan appealed the verdict, but the next higher instance upheld the conviction in July 2019.

At the end of 2018, Paludan visited the United States and Canada and recorded some interviews with local politicians. In a video taken in front of the New York City skyline , referring to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , Paludan said the correct answer to terrorism was "overwhelming physical power" as it "is the only thing Muslims understand". In Denmark as well as in other countries it must therefore be ensured that the "enemies are taken out." The "ultimate goal" will be achieved when "not a single Muslim remains on earth." This statement was often used as a call to Genocide , while Paludan claimed that he only hoped that Muslims would give up their religion or be converted.

For Folkemødet , an annual political event on the island of Bornholm , the party distributed leaflets in 2018 with a list of 12 bans aimed at Muslims under the title “Danmark 2019 for Muslims”. They called for a ban on praying and fasting, a ban on Islamic clothing, a ban on halal food, a ban on speaking the languages of Islamic countries in public (such as Arabic , Turkish or Persian ), a ban on training for Muslims, and a ban on property for Muslims, a ban on Muslims from using motor vehicles and bicycles with more than one gear , a ban on Muslims from being in public places, a ban on Muslims from speaking to Danes unless they were first approached by Danes, a ban for Muslims to be in nature, a ban for Muslims to work in professions with more than 2 years of training and a ban for Muslims to shop in grocery stores if these are run by Danes. Professor Sten Schaumburg-Müller from the jurisprudential institute of the Syddansk Universitet described the demands as "flawless apartheid ", whereas Paludan asserted that the prohibition catalog was merely humorous and did not correspond to the party program.

criticism

According to Danish legal scholars, the party program violates the Danish Basic Law and international conventions. A professor of legal history said that the party's election manifesto was “historically narrow”, but that the party line would be reminiscent of that of the National Socialists in the Danish Folketinget (1939–43). The founder, Rasmus Paludan, was convicted of racism (Section 266b of the Danish Criminal Code); The verdict is not yet legally binding.

The party received international attention through Paludan's statements (for example in The Guardian ).

In the course of the Folketing Elections in 2019, then Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen strictly distanced himself from the views of the party and ruled out any cooperation with it, including in the form of tolerance. In particular, he called the party's extremist and xenophobic views and the resulting polarization of the migration and Islamic debate “dangerous”.
