The Siumut (German forward ) is a political party in Greenland .
history
The origin of the founding of the Siumut lies in the decision taken in 1971 by the three politicians Jonathan Motzfeldt , Lars Emil Johansen and Moses Olsen to establish a political group that campaigns for the independence of Greenland. At first she saw the European Union as the main adversary, after Greenland became part of it in 1972, because it was seen as a decisive driver for undesired modernization against the Greenlandic culture and against national self-determination. In 1975, Moses Olsen first published the newspaper Sujumut , which advocated political self-determination in Greenland and the self-identification of the Greenlanders. In 1976, individual local associations of party form were founded and in July 1977 it was founded as a national party.
The first political goal was achieved in 1979 with the introduction of the Hjemmestyre , which made Greenland autonomous for the first time. The EU left the EU in 1985 after a referendum held in 1982 and the Greenland Treaty was drawn up in 1984. Before that, Siumut politician Finn Lynge had sat for Greenland in the EU Parliament .
In the first parliamentary election in Greenland in 1979, the Siumut achieved an absolute majority, which has never been achieved by any party since. However, in the first few years the Siumut on the left-nationalist side and the Atassut on the right-wing unionist side united almost all voters, so that the first Greenland parliament was only a two-party parliament. Four years later, the Atassut managed to get more votes than the Siumut, but just as many parliamentary seats. Therefore, the left Inuit Ataqatigiit decided who they wanted to form a coalition with and let the Siumut continue to rule. In the following years Atassut and Siumut continued to fight for political supremacy in the country, which always fell in favor of the Siumut. Only in 2009, after 30 years in power, was the Siumut overtaken by the Inuit Ataqatigiit, so that they had to switch to the opposition. Four years later she was able to regain government power and has been the head of government since then.
Political orientation
The first party program of the Siumut called for political autonomy within the Rigsfællesskabet with Denmark , which should lead to independence in the long term, if this is economically possible. To do this, she called for a withdrawal from the EU and demanded full self-determination by the Inuit over their own affairs, such as the use of mineral resources. In social terms, it is committed to social security and fair distribution of income, which means that the Siumut can be classified as a social democratic party.
