EC membership referendum in Greenland in 1982

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The referendum on Greenland's membership in the European Communities was a popular vote on the continuation of Greenland's membership in the European Communities on February 23, 1982.

The background to this was Greenland's entry into the European Communities in 1973 as an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark . This happened despite a majority of 70% of Greenland's voters who voted against Denmark's accession in the 1972 referendum. The Eurosceptic Siumut party emerged from the elections in the spring of 1979 as the strongest force and the Greenland parliament passed a referendum in the spring of 1981 to decide whether Greenland would remain a member of the European Communities. As a result of the referendum, a majority of voters voted to leave the EC.

The referendum was implemented in the Greenland Treaty , which came into force in 1985 and continued to give the EC its fishing rights. Greenland continues to be classified in the category “ Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union” with minimal application of European law .
