The 2001 Folketing election on November 20th was the 64th election to the Folketing , the Danish parliament. The previous election had taken place on March 11, 1998. The election was surprisingly brought forward by Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen and merged with the local elections on November 20.

The ruling Social Democrats under Prime Minister Rasmussen suffered significant losses. For the first time since 1920 they fell back to second place behind the right-wing liberal Venstre . Its chairman, Anders Fogh Rasmussen , was able to form a minority cabinet with the conservatives , which entered into cooperation with the right-wing populist Danish People's Party .

Venstre was able to gain especially in the big cities of Copenhagen , Aarhus and Aalborg , while the Danish People's Party achieved its best result with 14.0 percent in Sønderjylland's office . Traditionally, the strongholds of the conservatives were in Frederiksborg Amt and Frederiksberg . The social democrats last performed similarly poorly in 1973 when the Danish party system underwent massive changes and the number of parliamentary parties doubled from five to ten. Two of the parties that emerged at the time had to leave the Folketing in 2001: the Center Democrats and the Progress Party failed at the two percent hurdle. The Red-Green Unity List and the Christian People's Party barely skipped this.
