Bendt Bendtsen

Bendt Bendtsen (born March 25, 1954 in Odense ) is a Danish politician of the Conservative People's Party and has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 .

Life

Bendtsen graduated from secondary school at Odense Friskole in 1971 , and in 1972 he received an exam from the agricultural school in Corinth / Funen . First he worked in agriculture, in 1975 he began training at the Danish Police School. From 1980 he worked as a police officer, from 1984 at the Odense Criminal Police .

From 1994 to 2009 Bendtsen was a member of the Danish Folketing Parliament . In the 1990s, the Conservative Party suffered from personal squabbles that contributed to a fall in voter support in the 1998 parliamentary elections . Bendtsen, who had been quite unknown until then, was able to collect the conservatives again temporarily. On August 5, 1999, he was promoted to political spokesman and parliamentary group leader of the Conservatives, and from 2000 to 2008 he was also party chairman.

In 2001 he became Danish Minister for Economic Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen . On September 9, 2008, he resigned his previous offices in favor of Lene Espersen and took over the top candidacy of the conservatives in the 2009 European elections .

EU parliamentarians

Since 2009 Bendtsen has been a member of the European Parliament and a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and of the delegation for relations with the countries of South Asia. As a substitute he is active in the Committee on Budgets and in the delegation for relations with Australia and New Zealand as well as in the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.

In May 2012, he founded together with the Austrian MEP Paul Rübig and Bulgarian deputies Nadezhda Neynsky the European small businesses association of the European People's Party , SME Europe .
