Lars Barfoed (born July 4, 1957 in Frederiksberg ) is a Danish politician of the Conservative People's Party . In 2011 he became chairman of the party and parliamentary group, and in June 2012 he swapped group chairman for the post of political spokesman . In the 2015 Folketing election , he was unable to move into parliament again.

Origin and occupation

Barfoed is the son of the captain Erik Barfoed and the office worker Tove Barfoed.

In 1981 he graduated from the University of Copenhagen with a law degree . From 1978 to 1985 he was a member of Rødovre City Council . Barfoed worked from 1981 to 1982 as the legal secretary of the conservative folk group. From 1982 to 1985 he was secretary of the Danish employers' association and in 1985 was promoted to director of the branch association Dansk Organization af Detailkæder . From 1988 to 1993 he was director of the retail association Butikshandelens Fællesråd and, after a merger, director of Dansk Handel & Service until 1994. From 1994 and 2001 he was director of Finansrådet , the association of Danish banks and savings banks.

In 2001 Barfoed won a seat in the Frederiksborg office for the Conservatives , and since 2007 he has represented the newly formed constituency of Nordsjællands Storkreds . In 2008 he was temporarily chairman of the Conservatives in the Folketing.

Barfoed was Minister for Family and Consumer Affairs from February 2005 to December 2006 . He was forced to resign as a result of a food scandal. In September 2008 he returned to the cabinet as Minister of Transport . In the cabinet reshuffle on February 23, 2010, he became Minister of Justice .

After the severe election defeat in 2011 and the replacement of the Lars Løkke Rasmussen I government , Barfoed moved to the top of the parliamentary group. In the course of a castling in the conservative top staff, he handed over the chairmanship of the parliamentary group to Brian Mikkelsen in 2012 and has since acted as political spokesman. On August 6, 2014, Barfoed drew conclusions from the persistently poor poll ratings of the Conservatives and announced his withdrawal from party leadership. His successor in the party leadership was Søren Pape Poulsen .

Since 2006 he has been in command of the Order of Dannebrog .
