Hans Engell (born October 8, 1948 ) is a Danish journalist and former politician of the Conservative People's Party .

Life

Hans Engell completed a journalism training at Berlingske . In 1978 he took over the management of the information and press service of the Conservative Party. From 1982 to 1987 he was Minister of Defense under Poul Schlüter , and since 1984 also a member of the Folketing . From 1987 to 1989 he led the conservative parliamentary group until he moved back to the cabinet, this time as Minister of Justice.

After Schlüter's resignation in 1993 as a result of a cover-up scandal involving Tamil refugees, Engell was again parliamentary group leader and political spokesman for the Conservatives. He made a name for himself with defense and security issues. In 1995 Engell also took over the party chairmanship from Torben Rechendorff. Engell was assigned to the right wing of the party, but understood how to combine emphatically conservative basic views with pragmatic flexibility. He repeatedly made compromises with the Social Democratic government under Poul Nyrup Rasmussen . Relations with the other bourgeois opposition party, the Liberals under Uffe Ellemann-Jensen, were correspondingly tense .

In 1997, Engell had to resign as party leader after causing a traffic accident under the influence of alcohol. He remained chairman of the parliamentary group until the parliamentary elections in 1998 and took an active part in the erupting fighting over the party leadership. In 2000 he left parliament, resigned from the Conservative Party and became the chief editor of Ekstra Bladet newspaper . He had to leave this position in 2007. He continues to work as a political commentator for Ekstra Bladet and BT . He also comments on Danish domestic politics for TV 2 .
