Nick Hækkerup (* 3. April 1968 in Fredensborg ) is a Danish politician of the Social Democrats and since June 27, 2019 Danish Minister of Justice . Previously, he was Minister of Defense , Europe, Trade and Health.

Life

family

Hækkerup comes from a well-known family of politicians. His father, Klaus Hækkerup, was mayor of Fredensborg-Humlebæk for many years . His grandfather Per Hækkerup was foreign, trade and economic minister in the 1960s and 1970s, while his grandmother Grete Hækkerup was a long-time member of the Folketing and Vice-President of Parliament. His great-grandfather, Hans Kristen Hækkerup, was the mayor of Ringsted Municipality and a member of the Folketing. Nick Hækkerup's younger brother Ole Hækkerup is also an MP; he is the husband of Minister of Social Affairs and Integration Karen Hækkerup .

His great-uncle Hans Erling Hækkerup , the older brother of Per Hækkerup, was for many years a member of the Folketing and Minister of Justice and the Interior in several governments, while his uncle Hans Hækkerup was a long-time member of the Folketing and, between 1993 and 2000, was also Minister of Defense.

Professional and political career

After attending school, Hækkerup began studying law at the University of Copenhagen in 1988 and graduated in 1994. After a short post as an employee at the Supreme Tax Court ( Landsskatteretten ), he was a doctoral student at the University of Copenhagen between 1994 and 1998, where he completed his doctorate in 1998 on the subject of Kontrol og sanktioner i EF-rescue (controls and sanctions in EC law). He then worked as an associate professor at the University of Copenhagen between 1998 and 2000.

During his doctorate, he began his political involvement in local politics and was a member of the town council of Hillerød from 1994 to November 2007 , and from 2000 to 2007 as mayor of that municipality. In 2004 he became a member of the board of directors of Atlantsierendenlutningen , a Danish organization that deals with security policy in NATO , the EU , the OSCE and the UN .

Hækkerup, who became vice-chairman of the Social Democrats in 2005, was elected for the first time as a member of the Folketing in the 2007 Folketing election and has since represented the constituency of Nordsjællands Storkreds . He worked on the finance and tax committees and served as a deputy member on the legal and local committees. He also worked in the social democratic group as a spokesman for tax policy .
