Nicolai Wammen (2009)

Nicolai Halby Wammen (born February 7, 1971 in Holbæk ) is a Danish politician of the Social Democrats and current finance minister . Before that, he already held the post of Minister for Europe and Defense .

Life

The son of a journalist and a speech therapist studied political science at the University of Aarhus after attending the Brobjergskolen and Marselisborg Gymnasium . Already during his studies he was involved in local politics in Aarhus and between 1997 and 2001 was both a member of the local city ​​council and a member of the board of the Aarhus Festival Week , the Aarhus Festuge .

After he ran unsuccessfully for a mandate in the Folketing in the constituency of Skanderborgkreds in 1998 , he was elected member of the Folketing for the first time in the Folketing election in 2001 after completing his studies and represented the constituency of Århus Amtskreds there until February 8, 2005 . During this time he was also the financial policy spokesman for the social democratic group from 2001 to 2004 .

He was subsequently elected mayor of Aarhus Municipality to succeed Louise Gade and held this office until 2011.

In the 2011 Folketing election , Wammen was again elected member of parliament and has since represented the interests of the constituency of Østjyllands Storkreds in the Folketing. On October 3, 2011, Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt appointed him Minister for Europe in the newly formed government of Denmark.

From October 2011 to August 2013 he was Danish Minister for Europe, then from August 9, 2013 to June 28, 2015, Danish Minister of Defense . After the folk election in 2019 , Wammen has been Danish Finance Minister since June 27, 2019 .
