Palle Julius Skipper Simonsen (born May 6, 1933 in Sall , Favrskov Kommune , Region Midtjylland , Denmark ; † April 16, 2014 ) was a Danish politician from Det Conservative Folkeparti , who was a member of the Folketing and Minister of Social Affairs and Finance for almost twenty years .

Life

Member of the Folketing and Minister

Simonsen was after a business education at the Graduate School of Jutland (Den Jydske Handelshøjskole) in Aarhus as since 1953 Kaufmann worked. He began his political career in the youth organization of the Conservative People's Party (Conservative Ungdoms Landsorganisation) and was its deputy state chairman between 1960 and 1962. In 1965 he first became an authorized signatory and was most recently director of DCK International until 1970 .

In the Folketing election of January 23, 1968, he was elected for the first time as a candidate for Det Conservative Folkeparti as a member of the Folketing and was a member of this until 1975. During this time he was from 1970 to 1982 director of the civil protection association (Civilforsvarsforbundet) and in the electoral term from December 1973 to January 1975 he was chairman of the social committee of the Folketing.

In the Folketing election of February 15, 1977 , he was re-elected as a member of parliament and was a member of the Folketing until his retirement from politics in October 1989. In 1977 he was briefly chairman of the Defense Committee of the Folketing.

After Prime Minister Poul Schlueter took office , Simonsen was appointed Minister of Social Affairs (Socialminister) in his cabinet on September 10, 1982 . This coalition , known as firkløverregering (four-leaf clover government), was composed of ministers from Det Conservative Folkeparti, Venstre , Centrum-Demokratieerne and Kristeligt Folkeparti .

As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he took over the post of Finance Minister ( Finance Minister ) from Henning Christophersen on July 23, 1984 , while Elsebeth Kock-Petersen became the new Minister for Social Affairs. He held the post of finance minister until his retirement from politics on October 30, 1989, when he was replaced by his party colleague Henning Dyremose .

Manager and social engagement

After leaving the government and the Folketing, Simonsen became administrative director of the pension insurance company ATP (Arbejdsmarkedets Tillægspension) in 1989 and held this position until 1998. In addition, he was chairman of the Central Disability Council (Det Centrale Handicapråd) between 1990 and 2004 and chairman from 1991 to 2008 the Center for the Fund for Equal Treatment of the Disabled and Crippled (Center for Ligebehandling af Handicappede og Vanførefonden) .

Simonsen, who was CEO of Post Danmark between 1995 and 2002 , became CEO of the social research institute SFI (Socialforskningsinstituttet) in 1998 and held this position for ten years until 2008. At the same time he was chairman of the Council for Adult Education and Training ( Voksen- og Efteruddannelsesrådet ) between 1997 and 2000 .

He was also involved in the board of directors of Kofoed Skole , founded in 1928 by Hans Christian Kofoed , a non-profit organization to help people in emergency situations and as a member of the council for historic buildings (Ældreboligrådet) .

For his longstanding commitment, Simonsen was appointed Commander 1st Class of the Dannebrog Order in 1998 .

In 2009 Simonsen's book Gemt eller glemt - alle har ret til at være med was published , in which he dealt with mistakes in social policy and voluntary social work. His own voluntary commitment to social work was also evident when he founded the social association Det Sociale Netværk in 2009 with the former Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen , of which he was a board member and vice-chairman. This acts as an umbrella organization for social institutions, organizes an annual psychiatric meeting and operates the website Psykisksaarbar.dk .
