Hans Christian Svane Hansen (born November 8, 1906 in Aarhus , † February 19, 1960 in Copenhagen ) was a social democratic Danish politician and Prime Minister from 1955 to 1960 . He had previously been Minister of Finance and Foreign Affairs . As Prime Minister he was responsible for the Cabinets Hansen I and Hansen II .

Life

Early years

Hansen trained as a printer and was involved in Danish trade union work from an early age. In 1929 he became secretary of the youth organization of the Danish Social Democrats and in 1933 its chairman. In 1936 he was elected to the Folketing , the Danish parliament. After the German occupation of Denmark, he went underground and published a newspaper there.

Time as a top politician

In the first Danish post-war government, he held the post of finance minister from May 5 to November 7, 1945. He held the same office again from November 13, 1947 to September 16, 1950 (in between was Thorkil Kristensen from Venstre). In the government of Prime Minister Hans Hedtoft , Hansen was Danish Foreign Minister from 1953 to 1958. After the unexpected death of the head of government, he took over the office of prime minister on February 1, 1955 . In the same year he was also party president of the Danish Social Democrats.

Hansen actually wanted to lead his country into the newly founded European Economic Community ; but since the other Scandinavian countries had no interest in the EEC, Denmark became a member of the Nordic Council and the European Free Trade Association .

Until his death from cancer , Hansen remained Prime Minister and party president of the Danish Social Democrats.
