Thomas Madsen-Mygdal
Thomas Madsen-Mygdal (born December 24, 1876 in Mygdal , † February 23, 1943 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish politician and Prime Minister ( State Minister ) .
Family and career
The son of a farmer and radical politician worked alongside his work as a farmer as a teacher and from 1908 to 1920 as the rector of the Odense Agricultural School.
In 1920 he became chairman of the Agriculture Council founded on his initiative.
Political career
Party leader of the Venstre
Madsen Myrgdal began his political career as a representative of the Social Liberal Party ( Det Radical Venstre ) , but switched after the First World War to the Liberal Party ( Venstre ) .
From 1929 to 1941 he was chairman ( Partiformænd ) of Venstre. He was succeeded as chairman by Knud Kristensen .
Minister and Prime Minister from 1926 to 1929
On May 5, 1920, Prime Minister Niels Neergaard appointed him Minister of Agriculture in his cabinet. He held this office until the end of Neergaard's tenure on April 23, 1924.
On December 14, 1926 he was appointed Prime Minister ( State Minister ) by King Christian X as successor to Thorvald Stauning after the defeat of the Social Democratic Party (Socialdemokraterne) in the elections to parliament ( Folketing ) . At the same time he took over the office of Minister of Agriculture again.
On September 11, 1928, Aarhus University was founded on a private initiative under the name Universitetsundervisningen i Jylland (University Education in Jutland ) - the first university on the Danish mainland. Before that, school leavers in Jutland only had the choice of going to Copenhagen to study or crossing the border to Germany.
At first he could count on the support of the Conservative People's Party ( Det Konservative Folkeparti ) . However, this was withdrawn from him in 1929 after the Conservatives disagreed with the defense budget . Because of the withdrawal of support, new elections were necessary, which resulted in an election victory for the Social Democratic Party of Stauning and the Social Liberal Party (Radical Venstre) of Peter Rochegune Munch .
On April 28, 1929, he handed over the office of Prime Minister to Thorvald Stauning.
