Filicollis is a genus of scratchworms (Acanthocephala) that lives as an intestinal parasite mainly in wild and domesticated water birds such as swans , ducks , geese , seagulls and railings .
features
The adult worms are characterized by a very coarse and wrinkled tegument as well as a pronounced sexual dimorphism . The trunk ( Proboscis ) of the female is a thin walled bulb transformed and equipped with star-shaped hooks on the trunk apex. This is connected to the trunk via a long neck, and the animals have a long proboscis sheath. The males have an egg-shaped trunk with several rows of hooks and the front part of the trunk is covered with fine spines. They also have the trunk separated into two areas by a clear fold.
The eggs are spindle-shaped with concentric eggshells typical of the species, they have no bulges.
Way of life
The full-grown animals of the genus Filicollis live as full-grown animals as an intestinal parasite , especially in the small intestine of wild and domesticated water birds such as swans , ducks , geese , seagulls and railings . Water isopods ( Asellus aquaticus ) are particularly suitable as intermediate hosts .
species
Only two types are distinguished within the genus:
