Poul Hartling

Poul Hartling (born August 14, 1914 in Copenhagen , † April 30, 2000 ibid) was a Danish liberal politician of the Venstre party and a Lutheran pastor. From 1973 to 1975 he was Prime Minister of his country and from 1978 to 1985 the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees .

Life

Hartling studied Protestant theology until 1939. From 1934 to 1935 he was secretary of the Christian Academic Association, from 1939 to 1942 he was secretary of Danmarks Kristelige Gymnasiastbevægelse. From 1941 to 1945 he was chaplain of the Frederiksberg Church and then until 1950 pastor of Sankt Lukas Stiftelsen . In addition to his work as a pastor, he taught at the University of Copenhagen and the Menighedshøjskolen Marthabo. From 1945 he was a teacher at the N. Zahles seminarium and from 1950 to 1968 he was its director. His Christian commitment led him to the board of many Christian organizations.

Hartling was a member of the Danish Folketing from 1957 to 1960 and again from 1964 . Hartling became party chairman after Erik Eriksen and chairman of the liberal parliamentary group in 1965. In 1968 Hilmar Baunsgaard appointed him to his cabinet as foreign minister; from 1973 to 1975 Hartling himself was Danish Prime Minister with the Hartling cabinet . From 1978 to 1985 he was the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
