Villy Søvndal (born April 4, 1952 in Linde near Struer ) is a Danish politician for the People's Socialist Party , which he represented in the Folketing from 1994 to 2014 . From 2005 to 2012 he was party chairman. From October 3, 2011 to December 12, 2013 he was foreign minister of his country .

Life

Villy Søvndal was born as the son of the small farmer Peter Søvndal and his wife Agnes. In 1969 he obtained a secondary school certificate, two years later the HF exam, which roughly corresponds to the technical college entrance qualification. He spent two more years at Vestbirk Musikhøjskole before studying to be a teacher in Kolding from 1976 to 1980 . He worked there as a teacher until 1992. Since 1982 he was also a member of the local council and in 1984 ran for the first time for his party for the Folketing Parliament . In 1986 and 1991/92 he moved in as a successor in the Folketing for a few weeks each, but was unable to defend his mandate in the subsequent elections. He has been a properly elected MP since August 1, 1994.

In 2005 he was elected chairman of his party. The previously relatively inconspicuous politician, whose name can also be interpreted as "sleep valley", gained recognition across party lines. He is considered a good rhetorician. During his tenure, the political line was reformed and the party largely turned away from its previous line critical of the EU.

In the early Folketing elections in 2007 , his party was able to more than double its number of seats and, with 13%, became the fourth strongest force in parliament. In the Syddanmark region , traditionally a Venstre stronghold, Søvndal received the most personal votes of all candidates. In the 2011 Folketing election , his party suffered losses and won 9% or 16 seats. Nevertheless, it was enough for a center-left coalition in which Søvndal brought his party into government responsibility for the first time and took over the post of foreign minister himself.

In September 2012, Søvndal announced his withdrawal from party leadership. He took a cabinet reshuffle in December 2013 as an opportunity to give up ministerial office and parliamentary mandate. Before that, he and shortly afterwards his wife had to struggle with health problems, which is why Søvndal had been on leave since the end of October.

Søvndal has been married to Heidi Perto since 2011 and has three children.
