Holger Christian von Reedtz , also Holger Christian von Reedtz or Holger Reedtz , (born February 14, 1800 in Odense , † February 6, 1857 in Palsgaard ) was a Danish politician , diplomat , historian and astronomer .

Life

Reedtz came from an old Schleswig family. He studied history and law with distinction and passed the state examination in 1823 . In 1824 he became a chamberlain . During this time he conducted research in southern Germany , especially in Munich and Vienna, and then published the work History of Denmark from Knut I in Göttingen in 1826 . He then devoted himself to diplomacy .

Reedtz held a secretariat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1831 to 1843, which gave him some recognition. In this position he had, among other things, to lead the negotiations on Schleswig-Holstein. In 1845 he completely withdrew from politics and diplomacy in order to devote himself entirely to science.

In 1850 he returned to politics and diplomacy under Count Moltke . He became Foreign Minister of Denmark and negotiated the peace of July 2, 1850 alongside Pechlin . On December 20, 1851, he resigned from the cabinet. He died on his estate.

His astronomical insights are mainly limited to an extensive correspondence with Heinrich Christian Schumacher .
