Baron Friedrich Christian Ferdinand von Pechlin , completely Pechlin von Löwenbach (born January 22, 1789 in Fåborg , † October 28, 1863 at Dragsholm Castle ) was a German diplomat and statesman in the Danish service, who also emerged as a writer .

Live and act

Pechlin grew up in Nordborg on the island of Alsen , where his father Nicolaus Otto von Pechlin (1753-1807) was a bailiff . He studied law and passed the legal examination in 1811 with distinction. In 1813 he joined the Schleswig-Holstein law firm in Copenhagen as an auscultant . Only two years later, in 1815, he became legation secretary at the legation at the German Confederation in Frankfurt am Main under Friedrich von Eyben (1770-1825) who represented the interests of the Danish king in his capacity as Duke of Holstein andLauenburg represented.

Towards the end of 1818 he returned to Copenhagen as a deputy in the Schleswig-Holstein chancellery. But in 1825 he returned to the diplomatic service and succeeded Eybens as Bundestag envoy for Holstein and Lauenburg. In the course of the Schleswig-Holstein uprising in 1848, during which Pechlin was attacked journalistically by Johann Gustav Droysen as a representative of Denmark and which led to the Schleswig-Holstein War (1848-1851) , his position in Frankfurt became untenable. After the end of the war, he was appointed governor and Landdrost of the Duchy of Lauenburg in 1852 . In 1856, at his request, he was dismissed from this service with a pension and retired. His successor was Emil zu Rantzau .

As a writer, Pechlin first made a name for himself through his translation of Thomas Moore's Lalla Rookh in 1830. Several collections of his poems followed (1840, 1842, 1852). In 1844 he published a verse rendering of world history, which he divided into nine periods.

He was married to Adelheid Henriette Louise Caroline von Eyben (1808–1882), the daughter of his predecessor in Frankfurt, Friedrich von Eyben . After his death, she became chief steward of the Hereditary Princess Caroline of Denmark .
