Emil zu Rantzau

Christian Emil Heinrich Julius Graf zu Rantzau (* July 12, 1827 in Lyngby near Copenhagen ; † February 15, 1888 in Kiel ) was a German civil servant and politician in Schleswig-Holstein.

Life

Emil zu Rantzau came from the Rastorf house of the Holstein nobility ( Equites Originarii ) Rantzau and was the son of the governor and Landdrosten of the Duchy of Lauenburg Christian zu Rantzau from his first marriage to Nancy zu Rantzau from the House of Oppendorf (1798–1843). He grew up in Ratzeburg and attended the Lauenburg School of Academics .

As is typical for the Holstein nobility, he studied law at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin and the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In 1847 he became active in the Corps Guestphalia Heidelberg . When he was inactive , he switched to the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . After the Schleswig-Holstein War , he passed his exam in 1851. He was elected provost at Uetersen in 1857 and held this office until 1864.

In 1857, first his father and then his grandfather, the Secret Conference Councilor Count Carl Emil zu Rantzau on Rastorf (1775–1857) died shortly after each other , and Emil zu Rantzau inherited the Rastorf family major. From 1861 he was a member of the Holstein estates, became a state marshal and a member of the provincial committee.

He was married to his cousin Caroline Christiane Elisabeth geb. Reventlow (1837–1917) from the Wittenberg family, a stepdaughter of Otto von Rantzau . The couple had eleven children. The eldest son and heir of the Rastorf Majorate was Christian zu Rantzau .
