The Villeseen are an area protected by state planning to protect nature in the Ville , a mountain range west of Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Location and importance

Embedded between the cities of Brühl , Hürth , Erftstadt , Frechen and Kerpen , in the southern and central Rhenish district , lignite was extracted in various opencast pits in the 19th and 20th centuries . After the near-natural recultivation , a species-rich habitat for animals and plants has developed over an area of almost 75 km². In particular, the lake district with around 40 lakes and ponds, which arose from the remaining holes in the opencast mines, are valuable biotopes as breeding, spawning and retreat areas.

The area is part of the Rhineland Nature Park. There are several Natura 2000 protected areas within the area . Some lakes are used as bathing and recreational waters.
