The Bleibtreusee is one of the remaining lakes by lignite mining in southern Rhenish lignite mining area in North Rhine-Westphalia south-west of Cologne near the city Brühl , Hürth and Erftstadt in the Rhein-Erft district . It is part of the Rhineland Nature Park .

location

In the middle part of the Ville , where from the 19th to the middle of the 20th century the lignite was mined in smaller pit fields , today's Villeseen-Platte was created , an approx. 50 km² large area with mixed forests and over 40 lakes.

Bleibtreusee is located to the west of the nearby Brühl district of Heide and north of the Erftstadt district of Köttingen . Its spacious parking spaces can be reached via the B 265 (Luxemburger Straße) or from the center of Brühl via the L 184 (Theodor-Heuss-Straße).

Surname

The lake is named after Hermann Bleibtreu (1821–1881), one of the pioneers of the lignite industry in the Brühl area, who opened up a mine field south of Heide for the first time in 1874 (later Gruhlwerk ).

description

In the course of the recultivation measures by Rheinbraun and the landscape authority of the Rhein-Erft district , a species-rich flora and fauna was resettled. The Bleibtreusee as one of the medium-sized lakes in the chain of lakes of the Ville is a calcareous still water near Brühl-Heide, not far from the Heider Bergsee . The water bodies are artificial residual lakes with shallow water zones created by former lignite opencast mines , surrounded by larger forest areas with mixed trees typical of the site. Poplar , pine , red oak , larch , alder , beech , locust and birch alternate .

The lake has an area of approx. 74 ha . The small elongated island on the southern edge of the Bleibtreusee is reserved for breeding birds and has natural vegetation . The diving depth north of this island is up to 16 m, but is of little interest for scuba divers due to the dark underground. As on the Heider Bergsee, there are birds of prey ( Pandionidae ), grebes ( Podiceps cristatus ), wild geese (Anseriformes), kingfishers ( Alcedo atthis ) and common fish ( Gallinula chloropus ), which are protected as breeding birds on the island mentioned.

Over the decades, the thousand-leaf milfoil ( Myriophyllum heterophyllum ) has also settled beneath the surface . This species prefers to colonize stagnant and slowly flowing water and sometimes forms dense populations. Spangehl & Scharrenberg (1985) described the occurrence in North Rhine-Westphalia for the first time from the Heider Bergsee near Brühl, where this species can still be found today. In addition, in Bleibtreusee west of the island, as a result of eutrophication, large underwater ferns have formed just below the surface, which would greatly impede water sports with sailing dinghies or windsurfing boards and are therefore enclosed.

In the edge areas of the waters you can find, among other things: dwarf hedgehog cob ( Sparganium minimum ) - common water hose ( Utricularia vulgaris ) - broad-leaved stendrums ( Epipactis helleborine ).

Furthermore, through the development and promotion of reed zones in the water bodies, habitat for numerous migrating water birds in autumn and winter and other aquatic animals such as amphibians ( green toad , Bufo viridis ) and aquatic insects (e.g. scarlet dragonfly , Ceriagrion tenellum ) should be preserved or expanded .

use

Water ski facility at the north end

Parts of the site are left to their own devices and are declared as nature reserves . Ville, Kottenforst and the recultivated former lignite opencast mining areas with their lakes also serve as a recreational area for the people in the Cologne / Bonn region . Windsurfers and small sailing dinghies are permitted on the released parts of the Bleibtreusee and since July 2007 there has been a well-frequented water ski facility with an attached restaurant right next to the flat sandy beach at the north end . Nearby was the all-round observation tower, which has since been dismantled due to vandalism, of which only the base plate remains, which was integrated into a high-voltage pylon.

Parking spaces in the eastern lake area complement the development. In the spring and autumn months, fishing enthusiasts, circular hikers and occasional rangers are among themselves around the lake. A circumnavigation of the lake is about 5 km and takes about an hour.
