The Cologne / Bonn region is the regional association in the form of a registered association called Region Köln / Bonn e. V. based in Cologne . The region includes the cities of Cologne, Bonn and Leverkusen as well as the districts of Rhein-Erft-Kreis , Rhein-Sieg-Kreis , Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis , Rhein-Kreis Neuss and Oberbergischer Kreis .

The term Cologne / Bonn is also used synonymously for the metropolitan area with around 3.535 million inhabitants (as of 2014). The landscape of the Cologne / Bonn region is congruent with the southern part of the Cologne Bay and the Oberbergisches Land . The city centers of Cologne and Bonn are 24 kilometers apart as the crow flies. At the outer city limits it is only 8 kilometers between the districts of Cologne- Libur and Bonn- Geislar .

Originally started under the name Regio Rheinland , the aim of the merger is to promote the regional structural development of the entire metropolitan area of ​​Cologne and to market the region as an international location. The neighboring region in the west is the cross-border tri-national Euregio Meuse-Rhine and with this the Regio Aachen .
