The Volksbank eG, Cologne Bonn is a cooperative bank with headquarters in Bonn. It is one of the largest Volksbanks in the Rhineland and ranks 25th among all German Volksbanks and Raiffeisenbanks in terms of total assets . Its business area includes the urban areas of Cologne and Bonn as well as the Rhein-Sieg district and neighboring communities.

Volksbank Köln Bonn eG was created on January 1, 2017 from the merger of Kölner Bank eG and Volksbank Bonn Rhein-Sieg eG .

history

The oldest of the two predecessor institutes was the one in the cooperative register on September 27, 1867, initially as "Kölner Vorvorversch- und Creditverein e. G. “registered Kölner Bank eG. From March 16, 1869 it was called “Kölner Gewerbebank e. G. “, this was converted into a stock corporation in September 1923 . In 1960 the name was changed to “Kölner Bank von 1867 e. G. “instead. During the currency reform in June 1948, the number of members was 2,300; in December 1966 it was 10,200; the balance sheet total grew from 3.2 million DM to 180 million DM. In April 1991 the bank moved into the "IBM high-rise" on Hohenzollernring No. 31-35 with 11,000 square meters of floor space.

On April 22, 1901, the founder, Pastor Peter Herkenrath, and 52 master craftsmen signed the founding protocol of the “Handwerkerbank zu Bonn eGmbH”, and on May 17, 1901, it was entered in the cooperative register. In 1971 it merged with the "Raiffeisenbank Bonn-Süd", in 1995 with the "Raiffeisenbank Königswinter" and the "Eitorfer Raiffeisenbank", followed in 1996 by the "Volksbank Hennef", in 1998 the "Raiffeisenbank Vorgebirge" and in 1999 the "Volksbank Siebengebirge". Since 1995 the institute has operated as “Volksbank Bonn Rhein-Sieg”. By 1999, three other Volksbanks and Raiffeisenbanks joined. In 2001 the Volksbank Bonn Rhein-Sieg moved into a new head office in the Bonn district of Hochkreuz . In June 2017, the savings and loan fund Aegidienberg eG was merged with the Volksbank Bonn Rhein-Sieg.

Merger negotiations between the two institutes began in September 2016. Since the Volksbank Bonn Rhein-Sieg had more real estate than the Kölner Bank and therefore less real estate transfer tax would be incurred, it was agreed to merge with the Volksbank Bonn Rhein-Sieg as the acquiring bank. There are two legal headquarters in Cologne and Bonn , and the board of directors is in Cologne. The results of the negotiations culminated in resolutions of the representatives' meeting on May 29, 2017 (Cologne) and the meeting of representatives of the acquiring legal entity on May 30, 2017 (Bonn); the merger agreement was dated June 22, 2017. With the entries in the cooperative registers on June 16, 2017 (Bonn) and August 28, 2017 (Cologne), the merger is constitutively completed.
